Nigerian Court Invalidates PENGASSAN Chevron Branch Dissolution
The National Industrial Court of Nigeria has nullified the dissolution of PENGASSAN's Chevron branch executive committees and voided the branch elections conducted in September 2025. The court, presided over by Justice Joyce A. O. Damachi, declared that the union's Central Working Committee (CWC) lacked powers to dissolve the branch without prior approval from the National Executive Council (NEC).
The CWC had dissolved the executive committee and chapter committees on October 8, 2024, following a vote of no confidence against the branch chairman. However, the court ruled that this action was unlawful and ordered fresh democratic elections within 30 days.
Justice Damachi also declared that the eight-member caretaker committee appointed by the CWC was unconstitutional and voided the election guidelines issued on July 30, 2025.
