Nigeria's Business Environment Drives Away Multinational Companies
Financial analysts and economists have attributed the recent exodus of multinational companies from Nigeria to structural challenges and a difficult business environment, despite improvements in key macroeconomic indicators.
The latest company to announce its exit is Uber, which joined at least 15 other firms that have either exited or scaled back operations since 2023. These include Unilever Nigeria Plc, Procter & Gamble Nigeria, GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Nigeria Ltd, and Shoprite Nigeria.
Between January and October 2024, five significant companies exited or reduced local production due to challenges in the operating environment, including Microsoft Nigeria, TotalEnergies Nigeria, PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc, Kimberly-Clark Nigeria, and Diageo Plc.
Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product grew by 4.43% in real terms in the second quarter of 2026, with inflation moderating to 15.43% in July. However, analysts say microeconomic realities continue to weigh heavily on businesses and households.
