Nike Pours Billions into Shareholder Returns as Business Struggles
Nike's owners have received a staggering $28 billion in cash over the past five years, but the company's stock has trailed the market. The athletic giant generated revenue of $46.4 billion over the last twelve months and funded its shareholder returns with both share repurchases ($17 billion) and dividends ($11 billion). This payout is significantly higher than the median S&P 500 company, which returned about 16.1% of its market value during the same period.
Nike's business has been plagued by issues in its largest segments, including Nike sportswear and Jordan streetwear, where 'sell through remains challenged.' Management confirmed that they began to see a 'deceleration in retail sales trends' due to consumer pressure. The company expects these struggling divisions to continue being negative this fiscal year with improvement expected in the back half.
The sustainability of Nike's capital return program depends on fixing its core business issues, specifically in the lifestyle segments. If the company fails to recover, it could signal a lack of strong internal investment opportunities and raise concerns about the quality of its earnings.
