NM Delegation Tells Google and Apple: Keep Our Name, New Mexico
New Mexico's congressional delegation has urged Google and Apple to keep the state's name as 'New Mexico' on their online maps. The delegation, comprised of all Democratic members, sent a letter to the CEOs of both companies requesting that they publicly commit to not changing the name.
The move comes after President Donald Trump suggested renaming New Mexico 'New America' in a recent social media post. However, the delegation pointed out that the president does not have the authority to unilaterally change the state's name, which is established in the state constitution and would require a vote by the Legislature and subsequent ratification by statewide voters.
House Speaker Javier Martínez described Trump's posts as a 'shameless distraction' from rising consumer costs. He noted that such proposals could be filed during the upcoming 60-day legislative session that begins in January, but none have been announced yet.
