No Account Required: Jitsi Meet Makes Video Conferencing Easier
Afam, an experienced tech writer and advocate for data privacy and security, recently tried out Jitsi Meet as an open-source alternative to popular video conferencing tools like Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams.
He notes that many modern video calls now require users to sign in or create accounts before joining a meeting, which he finds unnecessary. Afam decided to test how seamless the experience would be without requiring an account, using Jitsi's self-hosted instance where neither the host nor guests need to have one.
The process was surprisingly easy and straightforward: after creating a room on his self-hosted Jitsi instance, he copied the meeting link and shared it with someone else. The recipient simply navigated to the link in their browser, gave camera and microphone permissions, typed their display name, and joined the call without needing an account.
Afam appreciates that Jitsi allows users to decide how authentication and access are configured on their own servers, giving them control over who can join meetings anonymously or with accounts. However, this also means that self-hosted users become responsible for managing updates, networking, HTTPS, configuration, and security.
