Norden Books First Maritime Emissions Reductions with Microsoft
Norden, a Danish shipping group, has successfully completed a transfer of verified maritime emissions reductions through the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials' Book & Claim registry. This achievement marks the first time this process has been carried out in the maritime industry.
The transaction involved Norden issuing and delivering verified shipping emissions reductions to Microsoft, making it the first company to use the RSB system specifically for maritime emissions. The reduction was made possible by Norden's use of certified waste-based biofuel on a number of voyages, which offered lifecycle emissions reductions of between 80% and 90% compared with conventional fossil fuels.
The transaction follows a pilot launched by Norden and Microsoft in May last year, targeting nearly 10,000 tonnes of CO2e reductions from Microsoft's maritime Scope 3 emissions over three years. The process was independently audited and based on a framework developed by the Smart Freight Centre.
