North America's Intimidating Hickory Horned Devil Caterpillar
The Hickory Horned Devil caterpillar is one of North America's largest and most intimidating-looking insects. It can grow up to 5½ inches long, making it relatively easy to spot on the ground. The caterpillar has black spines sticking out of its back and orange horns near its head, which may seem scary at first.
However, despite its appearance, the Hickory Horned Devil is harmless. Its spikes are not venomous or poisonous, and it does not sting. In fact, these caterpillars use their appearance as a bluff to protect themselves from predators.
The Hickory Horned Devil feeds on the foliage of several trees, including hickories, walnuts, and pecans. After feeding on large quantities of leaves, the blue-green caterpillar transforms into the regal moth, featuring orange-red coloration and beautiful white and green markings.
