Nvidia Acquires Hugging Face to Safeguard Open-Source AI
Nvidia has reportedly acquired Hugging Face in a defensive move to protect the open-source AI ecosystem. The acquisition aims to prevent major AI labs or companies like Google from controlling the platform, which could potentially slow down open-source AI development in the United States.
Hugging Face operates as a repository for AI models and open-source AI tools, with an estimated $150 million in run rate revenue. This puts it on par with GitHub before its acquisition by Microsoft.
The move follows concerns that emerged from Microsoft's GitHub acquisition, which put other companies at a disadvantage and led Google to support GitLab as an alternative.
