Nvidia and Amazon Ramp Up AI Computing Infrastructure with 2 Million Additional GPUs

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Nvidia announced that AWS will deploy an additional 2 million Nvidia GPUs across its global infrastructure in 2027 and 2028. This commitment roughly triples the total number of GPUs signed up for just five months earlier, when AWS planned to add over 1 million Nvidia GPUs starting in 2026.

The demand for AI computing has exceeded expectations, with Jensen Huang, Nvidia's founder and CEO, stating that 'NVIDIA and AWS have built one of the great growth engines of the AI era, and demand is running ahead of every forecast.'

AWS revenue rose 28% year over year in the first quarter, accelerating to 37% in the second, reaching $42.2 billion. The company's backlog of signed-but-not-yet-delivered work stood at $496 billion in the second quarter, growing at a triple-digit rate year over year.

Amazon's capital spending was already climbing before this announcement, with CEO Andy Jassy raising the figure to about $220 billion, citing the higher cost of memory. The company's purchases of property and equipment totaled $169 billion over the trailing 12 months as of the second quarter of 2026.
