Nvidia and Anthropic CEOs Clash on AI Safety at Dreamforce
Nvidia and Anthropic CEOs diverged on AI safety at Dreamforce. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, urged the industry to slow down model development in an essay published over the weekend. He proposed a three-step plan to temper the pace without sacrificing commercial advantage or the US lead in AI.
Amodei's proposal came after industry researchers raised alarms on AI's potential to cause catastrophic harm. Executives like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind Chair Demis Hassabis supported Amodei's plan.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang took a different view. He said market forces already exist and that the industry doesn't need new laws or regulations. Huang argued speed and safety are not mutually exclusive, but companies should pace themselves until they're sure their products will be appreciated by the market.
