Nvidia and Super Micro Staff Charged Over Banned AI Server Exports
Taiwanese prosecutors have charged nine individuals, including staff from Nvidia and Super Micro, for their involvement in the illegal export of high-end AI servers to mainland China. The servers, which were graphics processing units (GPUs) known as 'B300', are banned from sale to China due to strict export controls.
The case involves 74 servers that were successfully delivered to China, with some being sent through Indonesia, Japan, and Hong Kong before landing in mainland China. The prosecutors are seeking the maximum five-year sentence for four of the defendants, including an Nvidia manager who was identified as the 'key figure' responsible for authorizing the release of the B300 GPUs.
Nvidia spokesperson Patrick Rutherford stated that the company will work with Taiwanese authorities to help resolve the allegations. Super Micro also released a statement, saying that it cooperated with the Taiwanese authorities and will continue to enhance its export compliance program.
