Nvidia-Backed Deal Drives Up Chip Prices, Forces Apple Price Hikes
A $35 billion deal between Anthropic and Lambda is tightening chip supply, forcing Apple to raise device prices. The agreement has Nvidia at its center, as it leases land for a Texas campus where Lambda installs GPUs that Anthropic uses for AI computing.
The six-year contract includes 350 megawatts of dedicated GPU infrastructure, which will be used for future Claude model generations. This capacity is in addition to a separate $45 billion agreement with Nscale, covering 460 MW at a West Virginia campus using Nvidia's Vera Rubin systems.
Nvidia holds long-term leases for the land and is simultaneously chip supplier, data-center lessee, and investor in both Anthropic and Lambda. The company's position highlights its significant role in the AI infrastructure arms race.
As Apple absorbs huge increases in memory prices, it has become unsustainable. Tim Cook stated that Apple will start passing these costs on to consumers, affecting Mac, iPad, and iPhone prices.
