Nvidia Buys Hugging Face for $13 Billion Open-Source Push
Nvidia has acquired AI platform Hugging Face for $13 billion in its latest move to champion open-source AI models. The company's CEO, Jensen Huang, wrote that more than 18 million developers, researchers, and creators use Hugging Face to share over 3 million models, 500,000 data sets, and 1 million applications.
Despite recent security concerns, including a hack of Hugging Face's data processing systems in July attributed to OpenAI's ChatGPT, Nvidia is betting on the growth of open-source AI. Huang emphasized that Hugging Face will remain an open platform, allowing businesses to download and customize their own AI models.
The deal includes $1 billion for a retention plan for Hugging Face employees, according to CNBC. Nvidia's shares rose nearly 2% in morning trading following the announcement.
