Nvidia CEO Backs Hands-Off Approach to AI Regulation at Dreamforce
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed his opposition to increased regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) at Salesforce's annual Dreamforce conference in San Francisco. He sided with President Donald Trump's stance on the issue, stating that companies should be responsible for ensuring their products are safe.
Huang rejected calls for new laws and regulations, saying 'We don't need any new laws. We don't need new regulations.' Instead, he emphasized the importance of innovation speed and safety, arguing that they are not mutually exclusive. He suggested that companies can balance these competing priorities by pausing development if they feel it's becoming too rapid or unsafe.
The debate over AI regulation has gained momentum in recent weeks, with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei calling for more time to develop regulations and 'pace' AI progress amid concerns about its safety. In contrast to Huang, Amodei likened the situation to a car company seeing a competitor involved in a serious safety incident, prompting a need for more regulation.
Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff also weighed in on the issue, stating that technology is not inherently good or bad, but rather it's what people do with it that matters. He noted that San Francisco should prepare for a 'roller coaster' as Anthropic prepares to go public and the AI 'gold rush' continues.
