Nvidia Chip Found in Russian Cruise Missile Sparks Export Control Concerns
Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) recently analyzed the wreckage of Russia's S-71M 'Monochrome' cruise missile, revealing a commercial AI chip system-on-module from Nvidia. The TE980M-A1 chip, consistent with a Jetson Orin NX 16GB board, was found alongside an electro-optical camera module from China.
The combination of these components forms a self-contained perception system that allows the missile to see a target, compare it against onboard templates, and steer itself without human involvement. Ukrainian defense commentators described the S-71M as capable of 'independently searching for a target according to a predefined priority list, then attacking it without human involvement.'
Nvidia stated that their Jetson Orin modules are consumer-grade products sold for beneficial applications, not military purposes. However, compliance friction and export control gaps have been raised due to the presence of these chips in Russian military equipment.
