Nvidia Chip Found in Russian Missile Used to Target Ukraine
A Ukrainian military intelligence report has revealed that an Nvidia AI chip was used in a Russian missile to help target Ukraine.
The Defense Ministry's Intelligence Directorate (GUR) discovered the Nvidia Jetson Orin module in the remains of a Russian S-71 Monochrome cruise missile, which is an air-launched weapon with autonomous capabilities. The GUR reported that the use of this component may indicate the use of artificial intelligence technologies in the missile.
Nvidia had previously exited Russia in 2022 due to US sanctions, but it appears that the company's hardware has still been reaching Russian hands through other channels. The recovered chip is a Jetson Orin NX 16GB unit, which was released by Nvidia in early 2023 and is designed for use cases like autonomous systems.
Nvidia spokesperson stated that Orin modules are consumer-grade and sold to various individuals for different purposes, with military applications not being their intended design. The company also claimed that it cannot track products after they are sold and will take action if a customer is violating US export controls.
