Nvidia CMP Series Hacked to Unlock Full Memory Capacity
Nvidia's older Cryptocurrency Mining Processor (CMP) series has been hacked to unlock its full memory capacity. The hack, known as CMP Unlocker, is a software-based solution that can boost the memory of the CMP 170HX by up to 8X, from 8GB to 64GB and from 10GB to 40GB.
The CMP 170HX uses the GA100 (Ampere) silicon, which features six HBM2e memory stacks. However, Nvidia officially sold the CMP 170HX in 8GB and 10GB variants by disabling some of these stacks through firmware.
The hack works by bypassing Nvidia's Falcon security microprocessor, which is based on Jon Pry's research paper 'A Canary in the Crypto Mine: Defeating Stack Protection in a GPU Secure Coprocessor.'
