Nvidia Cuts OpenAI Data Center Financing Guarantee by Over Half
Nvidia has reduced its financial guarantee for OpenAI's hyperscale data center campus in Ohio from $250 billion to under $120 billion, a cut of more than 50%. The decision reflects growing investor unease about Nvidia taking on excessive financial risk.
Under the revised agreement, Nvidia will provide financial support only for the first phase of the project, covering debt financing for data center leasing and construction. The remaining phases will be decided later by Nvidia, which has a phased approach to providing guarantees.
The Ohio campus is being developed by SB Energy, a subsidiary of Japan's SoftBank Group, with a total capacity of 10 gigawatts. OpenAI is still negotiating a binding lease for the full capacity, and talks are expected to advance in the coming days.
