Nvidia Denies Plans for Special Chinese AI Chip
Nvidia has denied reports that it plans to start shipping language processing units (LPU) designed specifically for Chinese customers by the end of the year. In a statement, an Nvidia spokesperson said that the company has no China-specific LPU products in its roadmap and has not made any sales in the Chinese market at this time.
The reports of Nvidia's plans were first made by The Information, which cited two Nvidia employees as saying that the company would begin shipping small numbers of AI chips designed for Chinese customers by the end of the year. These chips are said to be an LPU version developed using technology from startup Groq through a license.
Nvidia has been working on adapting its AI chips to comply with US export control rules, which have restricted the sale of some of its products in China. The company's business in China has changed recently, as Washington approved the sale of Nvidia's H200 AI chips to several Chinese companies, including Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance.
