Nvidia Drops $3.5 Billion on MediaTek for Custom AI Accelerator Push
Nvidia has made another significant investment in the AI ecosystem by committing $3.5 billion to chipmaker MediaTek. The move allows Nvidia to extend its grip on the AI market, while also giving customers more flexibility in developing custom AI accelerators.
As part of the deal, MediaTek will adopt Nvidia's NVLink Fusion technology, which enables third-party processors to connect directly to Nvidia-based AI infrastructure. This technology is built off NVLink, a high-speed interconnect developed by Nvidia for its own chips.
The collaboration between Nvidia and MediaTek has three key areas: AI infrastructure, local AI computing, and automotive. In these areas, the two companies will work together to develop platforms that integrate Nvidia GPUs with MediaTek's system-on-chip (SoC) designs.
Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, stated that MediaTek is one of the world's great semiconductor companies, and that together they're building platforms that bring Nvidia accelerated computing to new markets. The investment provides MediaTek with a significant amount of cash and access to Nvidia's infrastructure as it attempts to establish itself as a major supplier of custom data center silicon.
