Nvidia Earnings Report Tonight: A Single Stock Could Move the Entire Market
Nvidia's Q2 earnings report tonight is expected to have a significant impact on the entire market, according to SpotGamma founder Brent Kochuba. The reason for this is that Nvidia has been absorbed into passive and factor-based products through its presence in 803 U.S.-listed ETFs, making it one of the most widely held companies in the world.
Kochuba believes that the entire market is somewhat riding on Nvidia's Q2 results tonight, as a single earnings report can ripple through broad index products, sector funds, thematic AI baskets, and momentum sleeves. When Nvidia moves, dealer hedging and index-level gamma positioning shift with it, which is why Kochuba said the S&P options market is showing what he called the 'fingerprints' of one company's earnings report.
Options traders are pricing in a 5% implied move for Thursday's session, which is lower than the historical average of around 7% over the last 8 to 12 quarters. The full-chain put-call ratio sits at 0.58, with the August 28 expiration carrying 886,423 calls traded against 277,566 puts.
Kochuba also noted a shift in fixed-income positioning that colors the backdrop, with bond market traders moving from put skew to bullish positioning over the past two weeks. This is attributed to recent Treasury Secretary jawboning on rates, which has led to a tone shift in assets such as gold and Bitcoin.
