Nvidia Eyes $3B Investment in SB Energy Ohio Data Centre Project
Nvidia is in talks to invest up to $3 billion in SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group, as part of its involvement in OpenAI's Ohio data centre project. According to The Information, Nvidia could commit around $1.5 billion when the agreement for the Ohio data centre is signed, with an additional $1.5 billion potentially invested through SB Energy's proposed initial public offering (IPO). The IPO itself could raise at least $5 billion, according to reports.
SB Energy, which develops large-scale power and data centre infrastructure, is working on multiple data centre campuses as demand for computing infrastructure grows alongside the expansion of artificial intelligence workloads. OpenAI's Ohio development forms part of its broader push to secure the computing and infrastructure capacity needed to develop and operate its AI models.
The proposed financing comes as Nvidia continues discussions around the funding requirements for the Ohio project, with the company initially guaranteeing less than $120 billion in financial support, down from a previously discussed figure of $250 billion. For Nvidia, the talks would further expand its involvement in the financing and development of AI data centre infrastructure.
The project's scale and scope are significant, with credit support for the Ohio project reportedly valued at roughly $100 billion. This investment could be crucial for OpenAI as it continues to develop its AI models, which require substantial computing power.
