Nvidia Halts AI Cloud Financing Deals Amid Control Concerns
Nvidia has paused its AI cloud financing deals amid concerns over control and antitrust issues. The company had introduced a credit program called the AI Compute Partnership, which offered financial support to smaller AI cloud providers in exchange for a share of revenue.
The program allowed Nvidia to rent back computing capacity from customers if they were unable to sell it themselves, and collect a share of the revenue generated from Nvidia-powered capacity. However, some employees expressed concerns about the level of control Nvidia was seeking over customers' businesses and choices, as well as the potential for antitrust scrutiny.
Nvidia had told some customers that they could only rent chips to approved customers, signaling a preference for capacity to be spread among multiple smaller AI firms rather than concentrated with one large buyer. However, this demand was met with resistance from some cloud providers who argued that choosing their customers should be a decision they are free to make.
Nvidia stepped back from the initiative last week, less than two months after introducing the program. The company could still modify the financing model or incorporate it into another program.
