Nvidia Hugging Face Deal Sets Stage for AI Semiconductor Boom
Nvidia made headlines this week by announcing its acquisition of Hugging Face for approximately $12.93 billion, confirming a deal reported last week at roughly 80x forward revenue.
Hugging Face is a distribution layer for open-source AI models with 18 million developers, 3 million models, and over 200,000 companies using the platform to find and deploy AI.
Nvidia has two constraints: supply, which is currently binding due to demand outpacing available supply by roughly twice, and addressable market. The acquisition addresses the latter constraint, allowing Nvidia to control its front door in general-purpose computing while custom silicon becomes more prevalent in specialized workloads.
In a related development, Broadcom reported fiscal Q3 revenue of $29.6 billion, up 86%, with AI semiconductor revenue reaching $16.7 billion, up 221% year-over-year and 54% sequentially. The company guided AI revenue to approximately $115 billion in fiscal 2027 and to double again to $230 billion in fiscal 2028, citing real demand from customers.
Broadcom's largest customers, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and Google, are commissioning compute capacity years ahead, expecting supply to become the limiting factor. This trend is echoed across the industry, with Ciena reporting direct cloud revenue up 82% and a backlog exceeding $8.5 billion.
