Nvidia Invests $1.5B in SoftBank Unit, Backs Data Center Project with AI Semiconductors
Nvidia Corp., a major U.S. chipmaker, has announced plans to invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy, a subsidiary of Japan's SoftBank Group Corp.
The investment will also guarantee up to $105 billion in lease payments related to a massive data center to be built by SB Energy in Ohio.
The data center is set to be used by OpenAI, the U.S. developer of the ChatGPT generative artificial intelligence chatbot, which has signed a 20-year lease agreement with SB Energy.
Nvidia plans to exclusively supply its AI semiconductors to the data center, with CEO Jensen Huang estimating that initial revenue from products supplied could amount to 'approximately $150 billion to $200 billion.'
