Nvidia is planning to invest up to $3 billion in Thinking Machines Lab, a startup founded by Mira Murati, formerly the Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI. This investment will be part of a new funding round that could reach $5-6 billion, valuing the company at over $40 billion.

The pre-money valuation for this round is at least $40 billion, more than triple the $12 billion valuation from the seed round in July 2025. Nvidia's investment will likely cover roughly half of the total raise, with Accel leading the round as a venture capital firm.

Murati's strategy focuses on building infrastructure for 'model customization,' rather than competing directly with OpenAI and Anthropic. Thinking Machines sells fine-tuning platforms to enterprises, allowing them to train and adapt models based on their own data and business needs.
