Nvidia Lands in the Middle of the Open-Model Ecosystem with $12.93 Billion Hugging Face Deal
Nvidia has agreed to buy Hugging Face for $12.93 billion in an all-cash deal, making it the second-largest purchase in Nvidia's history.
The chipmaker confirmed the acquisition on Thursday and stated that Hugging Face will retain its name, team, and support for non-Nvidia chips.
Hugging Face is a popular platform hosting over 3 million models, 1 million applications, and half a million datasets used by more than 18 million developers. The company's value lies in its scale, with over 200,000 companies using the platform to find and deploy models.
Nvidia will pay $11.9 billion to Hugging Face shareholders and up to $1 billion in retention equity for employees who join the company. The deal needs antitrust clearance and is expected to close in the first half of 2027.
