Nvidia-Led Alliance Aims to Secure AI Systems through Open Technologies
Nvidia has launched an open secure AI alliance aimed at improving the security of artificial intelligence systems in critical infrastructure, government services, and enterprise operations. The initiative brings together technology and cybersecurity companies to develop and share open tools, models, and techniques for AI security.
The alliance focuses on using open technologies to identify, remediate, and disclose vulnerabilities, allowing defenders to inspect, modify, and deploy AI systems themselves rather than relying on proprietary platforms. This approach is particularly relevant in the Middle East, where countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia are investing heavily in sovereign AI capabilities while strengthening national cybersecurity frameworks.
Irene Corpuz, founding partner of Women in Cyber Security Middle East, believes that the open secure AI alliance could shift AI security from relying on proprietary solutions to adopting open, transparent, and collaborative security tools. However, she also emphasizes the need for strong governance, secure-by-design practices, continuous testing, access controls, and threat monitoring to ensure the benefits outweigh the risks.
The initiative has attracted several prominent companies, including Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Cloudflare, Dell Technologies, Hugging Face, Palantir, and the Linux Foundation. G42, an Abu Dhabi-based technology group, is also participating in the alliance, reflecting the UAE's strategy to develop sovereign AI capabilities while engaging in global debates around open-source model security.
The open secure AI alliance aims to provide organizations with the ability to customize defensive AI around local infrastructure and regulatory requirements, rather than sending sensitive security data to externally controlled systems. However, Nvidia acknowledges that open models can be misused, including by weakening safeguards or adapting capabilities for cyber attacks.
