Nvidia, Microsoft Poised to Benefit from Accelerating AI Progress
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says that AI has reached the 'singularity,' a point where progress becomes difficult to predict or control. However, this description may be too broad, as current AI capabilities do not yet include independently designing and deploying increasingly capable successor systems.
Altman's comments were made on the Relentless podcast, where he stated, 'We're now, like, in the singularity.' This stage is characterized by rapidly accelerating progress in AI development, with models able to write code, find security flaws, and assist researchers in improving their own models.
Nvidia could benefit from this trend, as more capable AI models require increased computing power, driving demand for advanced processing and networking chips. The company has already seen a 92% year-over-year increase in data center revenue, with its new Dynamo software able to process AI requests up to 7 times faster.
Microsoft can also monetize stronger AI through Azure cloud infrastructure, its stake in OpenAI, and Microsoft 365 Copilot. However, the company must balance the cost of supporting its AI growth, which includes a significant increase in property, plant, and equipment expenses.
