Nvidia Partners Eye 2-Gigawatt AI Data Center Buildout in Australia
Nvidia has announced that its Australian partners plan to build up to 2-gigawatt data centers for AI infrastructure, with targets set for 2027. The DSX AI infrastructure will be housed in 'shell' capacity at these sites, which will require significant grid access and cooling capabilities.
The three partners involved are Megaport, Nextdc, and Maas Group-backed Firmus. Megaport is focusing on networking solutions to connect customers to Nvidia-accelerated computing, while Nextdc is emphasizing its 'AI-ready' data center sites. Firmus is expanding Project Southgate to build 'AI factories' for hyperscalers and AI-focused customers in the Asia-Pacific region.
The market reaction has been mixed, with Megaport seeing a 5% increase in value while Nextdc and Maas Group traded lower on the day. The importance of securing grid access and meeting power demands is highlighted by Nvidia's announcement, which sets a high bar for data center operators to meet.
