Nvidia Pays $12.9B for Hugging Face, Cementing Its Hold on AI Development
Nvidia has agreed to purchase Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, according to The Information.
The deal is similar to Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub in 2018, where the company bought a platform that was already being used by developers.
Hugging Face is a website where developers go to find and fine-tune models for artificial intelligence tasks. It has about $150 million in revenue and hosts a leaderboard, datasets, and transformers library widely used in the industry.
Nvidia's purchase gives it control over the default place developers go to work with AI models, making it easier for them to use Nvidia's software stack, which includes its CUDA platform. This could give Nvidia an advantage in the market as more developers choose open-source models that run on Nvidia hardware.
