Nvidia Poised to Dominate Space-Based Data Centers with SpaceX Deal
Nvidia is set to gain an even stronger hold on the market after Elon Musk announced that SpaceX will exclusively use Nvidia GPUs for its operations, including a new satellite-based data center system.
The move comes as no surprise, given Nvidia's current dominance of the datacenter GPU market at around 85 percent. The company's cash reserves of $13.2 billion also make it well-positioned to take on ambitious projects like this one.
The satellite-based system, dubbed Starmind AI1, will utilize Nvidia's Vera Rubin compute platform and feature a 250 kW compute payload. However, the high cost of launching such a system into orbit - currently estimated at over $23 million per kilogram - may be a significant challenge to overcome.
Musk has stated that SpaceX aims to reduce the cost per kilogram to $10 through its Starship program, which would bring the launch costs down to around $33,300. However, this goal remains aspirational, given Musk's past track record of overpromising and underdelivering on his projects.
