Nvidia Re-enters China with New AI Chip Amid Critical Supply Shortage
Nvidia is set to begin shipping a new AI chip to Chinese customers by year's end. The modified Language Processing Unit (LPU) will operate alongside primary graphics processors, accelerating AI model response times.
The LPU was developed using licensed technology from Groq and is a variant of Nvidia's existing chip. Due to US export rules, the next-generation Vera Rubin architecture cannot be exported to China, so engineers modified the LPU's software instead.
This move comes as several Chinese firms have already placed orders for the device, potentially pitting it against domestic inference hardware like Huawei Technologies' Ascend 950DT. However, regulatory approval from Beijing remains uncertain and may impact Nvidia's plans.
