Nvidia Reigns Supreme in Sovereign AI Infrastructure

Nvidia's dominance in the sovereign AI infrastructure has reached new heights, with its chips powering 92% of large language models worldwide. According to Counterpoint Research, this is not just a matter of countries adopting Nvidia's technology, but also due to the company's advanced silicon and mature CUDA software ecosystem.

The firm studied over 80 countries outside the US and China, finding that roughly 55 had developed domestic large language models. However, as Counterpoint Director Marc Einstein notes, 'domestic' does not necessarily mean 'independent.' The computing infrastructure remains overwhelmingly concentrated around Nvidia, despite efforts to establish sovereign AI systems.

Nvidia's partnerships with governments and institutions are a key factor in its success, with the company striking multi-billion-dollar deals across geographies. This creates a difficult cycle for competitors to break, as developers rely on Nvidia's mature ecosystem and every new deployment makes it harder to leave.

AMD, a rival chipmaker, holds only 4% of sovereign AI infrastructure, but is strategically positioned with its architecture used in Europe's flagship LUMI supercomputer. While AMD may not be able to overtake Nvidia, it can benefit from governments seeking greater supplier diversification.
