Nvidia RTX 50 Super Series Launch Delayed by Chip Shortage
The Nvidia RTX 50 Super series was expected to be a mid-cycle refresh of the existing Blackwell GPUs, but its launch has been delayed due to ongoing supply chain and chip shortages. The shortage is particularly affecting high-density VRAM chips, which are in high demand for enterprise AI applications.
Nvidia's decision to transition from 2 GB GDDR7 chips to 3 GB chips on the new cards was meant to increase efficiency, but this move has been hindered by the chip shortage. The cost of 3 GB GDDR7 chips is reportedly three times that of 2 GB modules, despite only providing a 50% increase in capacity.
The RTX 5080 Super is expected to have 24 GB GDDR7 memory running at 32 Gbps speeds, while the 5070 Ti Super will feature 18 GB GDDR7 memory. The 5070 Super is rumored to get a CUDA core count bump from 6,144 to 6,400.
