Nvidia Shield Owners Face Common Problems with Dolby Vision and HDMI-CEC
The Nvidia Shield TV and Shield TV Pro have been on the market for quite some time, but despite their age, they remain popular streaming devices. However, like any technology, they're not without issues.
One common problem owners experience is inconsistent Dolby Vision performance. Some users have reported that Dolby Vision-encoded movies and TV shows look too dark and stutter when playing on their Nvidia Shield. This issue doesn't seem to be limited to a single app, as some users have experienced it with Kodi, Disney+, and Apple TV.
Nvidia's 9.2.4 update addressed several bugs, including stutter and slowdown when watching Dolby Vision content, especially on Disney+. Users can check if their Shield is running the latest software by going to Settings, then Device Preferences, then About, and selecting System Upgrade. Another solution is to use the Match Frame Rate feature or a third-party service called tvQuickActions Pro.
Other issues with the Nvidia Shield include HDMI-CEC handshake problems and overheating devices. CEC allows users to control their TV's power, volume, and channels using just their Nvidia remote. However, some users have reported that their Shield randomly powers on TVs and projectors when all devices are in sleep mode. Disabling and re-enabling CEC on affected components may resolve this issue.
To prevent overheating, users can manually adjust the fan speed for their Nvidia Shield by going to Settings, then Device Preferences, then System, and selecting Fan Mode. They can also use a can of compressed air to clean out dust from the device.
