Nvidia Splurges $13 Billion on Hugging Face Acquisition
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has announced that his company will spend $13 billion to acquire Hugging Face, an open-source AI platform. This is a significant move for Nvidia as it looks to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing AI market.
Hugging Face hosts pre-trained AI models, training data sets, cloud-based testing environments, and libraries of code related to AI tasks. The platform has over 18 million developers, researchers, and creators using it to share millions of models, datasets, and applications.
Nvidia's motivation for acquiring Hugging Face is twofold. Firstly, the company wants to maintain its dominance in the top-of-the-line chip market by retaining a larger market share even if closed-source AI models move away from Nvidia's technology.
Secondly, Nvidia aims to reestablish itself in the cloud services market, which has seen significant revenue gains in recent quarters. Hugging Face's existing cloud-based developer tools could help Nvidia achieve this goal.
