Nvidia Surges Ahead in Robotics Race with Tesla Struggling Financially
The robotics industry is rapidly advancing, with companies like Nvidia and Tesla vying for dominance. Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang believes that 'every industrial company will become a robotics company,' and management sees physical AI as its next big tech opportunity.
Nvidia has developed a universal, open-source AI foundation model for humanoid robots called Isaac GR00T, which enables vision and speech processing in real-time. Its Jetson Thor supercomputer is also used by leading robotics companies like Boston Dynamics and Amazon Robotics for artificial intelligence inference training and robotic simulation.
Morgan Stanley estimates that the market potential for humanoid robotics could be worth $5 trillion by 2050, with 1 billion robots worldwide. Nvidia's physical AI revenue has already reached an annual run rate of $10 billion, and it believes this will grow exponentially to $100 billion in less than 10 years.
In contrast, Tesla is focused on building its Optimus humanoid robot, but the company is burning through cash as it transitions to robotics. Its capital expenditures increased 142% to nearly $5.8 billion in Q2 2026, causing free cash flow to decline rapidly to negative-$1.1 billion.
