Nvidia Tests Lower Memory Configs for Rubin Ultra Amid Supply Chain Woes
Nvidia is reportedly testing lower memory configurations for its upcoming Rubin Ultra accelerator due to concerns over sourcing enough HBM (High-Bandwidth Memory) in time.
The company has been working on optimizing its Rubin Ultra design, which was first showcased at GTC earlier this year. Initially, the accelerator was expected to come with 1 TB of HBM4E memory, but The Information reports that Nvidia is now testing versions with as little as 192 GB and 256 GB of memory.
The shift from HBM4E to standard HBM4 may also be a cost-cutting measure. HBM4E offers customizable base logic die, which has reportedly caused supply chain strain for memory manufacturers. Nvidia's Rubin Ultra design is part of the Kyber NVL144 roadmap, set to roll out in 2027.
