Nvidia Worker Among 9 Charged in Taiwan Chip Smuggling Case
Nine individuals, including an employee of Nasdaq-listed Super Micro Computer, have been charged in Taiwan for their role in smuggling high-end artificial intelligence servers to China. The indictment follows an investigation into shipments of AI servers made by Super Micro and containing advanced Nvidia chips to China in violation of U.S. export controls.
The defendants were accused of breaching trust and forging documents to smuggle 74 servers containing Nvidia chips to China, with eight of the nine defendants charged with breach of trust. Three of the defendants were also charged with embezzlement. The servers were transshipped through Indonesia, Japan, or exported directly to China.
Taiwanese prosecutors are seeking sentences of up to five years in prison for seven defendants who were 'driven by the pursuit of exorbitant profits' to collude in the illegal export of the servers.
