Nvidia's $20 Billion Bet on Space Exploration Technologies Raises Questions About Its AI Strategy
Nvidia's significant investment portfolio, which totals $63.4 billion as of June 30, includes a surprising second-largest holding in Space Exploration Technologies (SPCX), also known as SpaceX. This unexpected pairing may raise questions about Nvidia's investment strategy and its relationship with the AI industry.
The connection between Nvidia and SpaceX is xAI, an AI company that was invested in by Nvidia for $10 billion during a private funding round in January. In February, SpaceX fully acquired xAI, bringing products like Grok and X under its umbrella. This deal gave Nvidia a stake in the larger company, which appeared on the chipmaker's 13F filing after SpaceX went public.
As the leading provider of AI processors, Nvidia has a good understanding of which companies excel in the artificial intelligence space. The investment in xAI is a clear sign that the company believes in its potential. However, there are also concerns about circular financing, as Nvidia invested $10 billion into SpaceX, and SpaceX will use that money to purchase Nvidia's products.
The revenue generated by SpaceX's AI division rose 247% year over year in the second quarter to $2.56 billion, but the segment is still losing money from operations, amounting to $1.26 billion in the quarter. This growth supports Nvidia's investment thesis, but it may not be a significant concern for investors.
