Nvidia's $4 Trillion Empire Continues to Grow with Key Acquisitions
Nvidia has grown into one of the largest and most influential companies in the tech industry under the leadership of CEO Jensen Huang, with a market valuation of $4 trillion. While it's well-known for its graphics processing units (GPUs), Nvidia also owns several other companies that are less prominent but just as important.
One such company is PhysX, which was acquired by Nvidia in 2008 for an undisclosed sum. PhysX is a real-time physics engine that was initially developed to work alongside various systems and software, including the Unreal Engine 3. After being acquired, PhysX's team was integrated into Nvidia's GeForce lineup.
Nvidia has also made significant investments in other companies, such as Groq, which it licensed its AI models from for $20 billion. This move was seen by some as an attempt to avoid merger scrutiny. The company has also invested heavily in the startup Poolside, which is licensing out its AI models to Nvidia.
In 2019, Nvidia acquired Mellanox Technologies for $6 billion, expanding its presence in the networking hardware space. The deal was seen as a significant step towards Nvidia's goal of dominating the AI hardware market. After the acquisition, the Mellanox brand was retired, but the division within Nvidia continues to provide high-performance networking solutions.
Nvidia has also acquired other companies, including Cumulus Networks and Kumo AI. Cumulus is a network operating system that was widely adopted in the industry before being acquired by Nvidia. Kumo AI, on the other hand, is an AI company focused on financial applications, which Nvidia acquired for $400 million.
