NVIDIA's $50 Billion Bet on Its Own Demand Raises Questions About Risk
NVIDIA (NVDA) has taken on significant financial commitments through its partnerships in the AI and cloud computing industries. The company has pledged nearly $50 billion to fund its own demand, with some critics labeling this arrangement as 'circular financing'. This means that NVIDIA is essentially funding its own buyers, which raises questions about what would happen if these buyers were unable to pay.
According to Trefis analysis, even if all of the $50 billion stake were written off, it would only represent a fraction of NVIDIA's free cash flow. The company generated over $127 billion in free cash flow over the trailing twelve months, and still holds $24.1 billion more cash than debt.
NVIDIA's exposure to this risk is not as high as it might seem, according to management. The company says that most of its customers are investment-grade or backed by one, and that collections would be the earliest sign of trouble. In fact, collections have already increased to 60 days in fiscal Q2 2027 due to extended payment terms for large purchases.
NVIDIA's ability to absorb any losses is also bolstered by its supply-constrained outlook. The company guided fiscal 2028 revenue growth to about 70%, and said customers' forecasts point to demand doubling. If a buyer were to step back, they would likely enter a queue of other customers waiting for capacity.
