Nvidia's Accelerated Product Cadence Creates Supply Chain Bottleneck
Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang has been touting the company's accelerated product cadence as a strategic advantage, allowing it to keep competitors behind and provide continuous performance improvements for customers. However, according to JPMorgan analyst Harlan Sur, Nvidia management told the firm that without supply constraints, its business could grow by more than 100% year over year.
This presents a contradictory message from Nvidia, as they are simultaneously saying that supply constraints are preventing them from converting full demand opportunity into revenue. The company's shift to an annual data-center platform cadence has led to increasingly complicated GPUs, memory systems, and other components being introduced in roughly half the time previously available.
This accelerated product strategy is one of the principal reasons for the supply chain pressure, according to Sur. Nvidia's management indicated that their business could grow by more than 100% year over year if capacity constraints were removed. This would imply a substantial revenue opportunity without requiring Nvidia to demonstrate every expression of customer demand represents a funded, nonduplicative order.
