X. Eyee, a partner at Offline Research and former engineering leader at Google and Microsoft, expressed skepticism about the current hype surrounding Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) in an interview with CNBC on September 8, 2026.

Eyee praised OpenAI's new Astra model as a breakthrough for lab automation and coding agents, but argued that the definition of AGI used by the industry is flawed. According to Eyee, the current definition measures only labor substitution, excluding critical aspects of human intelligence such as care work, judgment under ambiguity, and cultural knowledge.

This narrow focus on labor substitution ignores most human cognition and allows companies like NVIDIA, which has invested heavily in AGI research, to inflate their valuations. Eyee noted that the industry is celebrating human-level intelligence with a definition that leaves most of humanity out.
