Nvidia's Corporate Venture Strategy Pays Off Big Time
Nvidia's corporate venture strategy has yielded tens of billions of dollars in paper returns from investments in AI startups xAI and Cursor, which were sold to SpaceX. However, the company's real gains come from the business relationships it has forged through these investments.
Nvidia invested over $100 billion in the past few years into AI startups, understanding the power of corporate venture capital from its own early days as a startup backed by SEGA. The company's CEO, Jensen Huang, joked about SoftBank's failure to hold onto Nvidia stock long-term, which would have earned nearly $1 trillion if held.
The real value of CVC investment for Nvidia lies in the aligned business relationships it has created. For example, SpaceX has an exclusive relationship with Nvidia to use its AI tech to build out its planned near-10GW data center by the end of next year. This will result in significant revenue for Nvidia, with $150 billion to $300 billion flowing into its books.
