Nvidia's Customer Concentration Surges to 44% Amid Data Center Boom
Nvidia's customer concentration is rising rapidly, driven by its explosive data center business. In the first half of the current fiscal year, three customers each contributed more than 10% of total revenue, together accounting for 44%. This is a stark contrast to fiscal 2023, when no single customer crossed the 10% threshold.
The direct driver of rising customer concentration is Nvidia's data center business. Revenue from that segment soared from approximately $15 billion in fiscal 2023 to $193.7 billion in the previous fiscal year, and is on track to potentially double again this year. As a result, the company has become increasingly dependent on top-tier customers.
Analysts suggest that three of Nvidia's largest customers are likely Dell or Hon Hai Technology, both of which are system integrators that incorporate Nvidia chips into servers and resell them to other enterprises. These companies have seen significant growth in their AI-optimized server sales, with Dell reporting $16.4 billion in revenue and Hon Hai posting 35% year-over-year revenue growth.
However, rising customer concentration is already a risk on its own, but the fact that these major customers are simultaneously advancing their own chip development programs makes the situation even more complex. Microsoft, Meta, and SpaceX are all developing their own AI chips, which could gradually decline demand for Nvidia's products once they mature.
