Nvidia's DLSS 5 Struggles with Stylized Games, Performance Dips Reported
Nvidia's DLSS 5 technology has been making waves in the gaming community, but it seems to have some limitations. The company has admitted that its current version is not designed for games with a 'strongly stylized aesthetic', and applying it to such content may work against the art direction rather than improve it.
DLSS 5 uses a technique called neural rendering, which aims to produce vivid, photorealistic game imagery by generating realistic lighting, materials, and fine texture details. However, this approach can be problematic when applied to games with non-photorealistic visual languages, such as voxel-based or cartoon-like games.
Nvidia has stated that a more general system would allow developers to specify the desired rendering style and transform a game scene accordingly while preserving its geometry, semantics, and temporal consistency. This is an important area for future work, but for now, DLSS 5 remains limited to photorealistic rendering.
