Nvidia's Funding Role Sparks Concerns About AI Stocks
Nvidia's role in financing the artificial intelligence (AI) boom has raised concerns among investors. Mark Cuban, a well-known entrepreneur and investor, recently compared Nvidia to an IPO machine from the dot-com era, stating that it is 'funding everyone and anyone.'
Cuban's comparison refers to the fact that Nvidia is investing in various AI-related companies, including model developers OpenAI and Anthropic, cloud operators CoreWeave and Nebius Group, and technology suppliers such as Intel and Synopsys. As of April 26, 2026, Nvidia had $42.3 billion in private investments and another $27 billion in contingent investment commitments.
Some of these investments may have a double benefit for Nvidia, as the value of its stake in these companies could increase while also generating revenue from sales to these companies. However, this is not an automatic process, and several investments are supporting suppliers and technology partners rather than just customers.
The impact of Cuban's warning on AI stocks is mixed. Large cloud providers and profitable AI chip and networking players can fund much of their spending from existing operations. However, specialized cloud operators face greater risk as they need regular outside funding to expand.
