Nvidia's Powerful H200 Chips Reach China Amid Tech Restrictions
Chinese tech giants ByteDance and Tencent have each received around 10,000 Nvidia H200 chips, a powerful artificial intelligence processor, in recent weeks. The shipments, which total over 20,000 units, come despite US-China technology restrictions.
The move highlights the delicate balance between Washington's efforts to limit China's access to advanced computing technology and Chinese companies' demand for high-performance chips. Nvidia's H200 is one of its most powerful AI processors, used for demanding workloads such as training and running large AI models.
US authorities have cleared Chinese companies to purchase up to 100,000 H200 chips each, but Beijing has reportedly placed restrictions on where the advanced processors can be used. According to the Financial Times, Chinese regulators want the processors to remain outside mainland China, with companies able to send them to Hong Kong instead.
The development could have wider implications for the technology rivalry between the US and China, as both countries compete to build domestic AI capabilities. For Chinese companies, access to Nvidia's advanced processors could provide additional computing power while domestic chipmakers continue developing alternatives.
